It's a tough job

Yesterday was one of the best and worst evenings of my job -- the annual scholarship selection meeting. I was more compelled by this year's candidates than ever before, which means that it was heartbreaking to know that we couldn't help all of the students we saw. It is simultaneously amazing, inspiring, frustrating, and shameful (as in "we should be ashamed of the conditions of our schools") that students have risen to such heights while struggling with poverty, group homes, family addictions, immigration issues, tracking, and flat-out racism.

Congrats to the new scholars and best of luck to the ones we didn't select. Y'all are ALL winners!!
