Fun in the sun

Yesterday I had the pleasure of participating in one of my favorite summer events, the annual Oakland Dinner Club/Baybrothas BBQ. 50 brothas out in the park, eating, socializing, cruising (mildly), and playing some fierce volleyball, complete with trash-talking and ear-snapping reads in between points.

At moments like these, I cherish being around a bunch of brothas, and miss having this greater community experience on a more regular basis. I especially love being in the presence of my artistic bretheren, like my local favorites Marvin K. White and Tim'm West. Maurice Jamal came home to Oakland for a screening of his film The Ski Trip (I'm sooo proud!!!). I was also excited to meet yummy New York authors Steven G. Fullwood and Khary Polk. And of course, I just love the banter and relaxed good time that all of us have while building community bonds (it also didn't hurt to be on the winning volleyball team - 13-11, 6-12, 12-3!).

We're a beautiful, fierce bunch!
