playing catch up
okay, so maybe these should be "biweekly thoughts of a left coast brotha"...
last weekend i met my new nephew, joshua miles. although he's only two months old, he seems to be a serious lil tyke. i spent a lot of time holding him, and he was very calm, looking around with a slightly furrowed brow - with what bits of eyebrows he has. perhaps he's already considering the long and tough road ahead as a black man-to-be in a post-civil rights era.
we also celebrated ray's birthday last weekend with his wonderful family and friends. i heart nueva york! i ate good food (thank you jesus for junior's cheesecake!), hung out with great people, traveled to four boroughs, and caught the christo gates before they disappear into central park history. i love the fact that not only did christo spend the money out of his own pocket to mount this public exhibit, he was also mindful of the materials and labor he was utilizing. not to mention that the new yorkers i met spoke of being drawn to the parkto see the gates, creating more of the vibrant energy that urbanites love (like i do). plus, the gates generated $250 million in tourist/travel revenue for the city of new york!
on another note, who said hair isn't still political? dang, can't a sista have entrepreneurial dreams, too?
and finally, i think i just saw the most fantastic dance performance ever. the alvin ailey dance theater is in town, and while i loved seeing the timeless revelations again, their second piece, love stories, put the eeeeeee in fieeeeeeerce! those children SERVED IT to a wicked musical melange of stevie wonder songs, ambient sounds, and house music. special props to dwana adiha smallwood, matthew rushing, abdur-rahim jackson, and clifton brown for their inspired, athletic, hip-hop-meets-house-meets-horton movement as only ailey dancers can pull off. i wanted to stand, point, and scream OKAAAAAY D*MMMMIT!!! my body is still vibrating.
