go to h*ll duke

a few weeks ago
caught up in march madness
i was gonna write a post about the carolina/duke rivalry
& how even now
dookie paraphernalia still hurts my eyes

sure there's plenty already written
but the rivalry is about more than basketball
underneath it are frictions applicable to
any private vs. state school rivalry
(like stanford vs. cal)
but seem particularly acute on tobacco road:
haves vs. have nots
northern vs. southern
social elite vs. regular folks
city vs. country
corporate vs. community
waspy vs. diverse
silver spoon vs. bootstraps

& although i certainly have issues with
carolina's plug-chewin' button-down good ol' boy mentality
(with a healthy dose of southern belle mixed in)
my impression of dookies is equally bad:
arrogant rich kids sweeping into my home state
looking down sculpted noses at
soul food & southern comfort
backs turned to the community
in pursuit of a hot degree
wall street pipeline
& good seats in cameron indoor stadium

& now i have
even more reason to hate dook:
the university's tepid response
to the alleged assault of a black woman
at a party of lacrosse players
(lawd, don't let this be another tawana brawley case)
exposing the raw ends of how
race/class/& power divisions
still exist

so while we keep an eye on durham
i'll cheer with extra meaning
for a carolina victory:
rah rah carolina
go to h*ell dook!
